Taiwan Mobile Co. (TWM) is a leading telecommunications company providing mobile, fixed telephony, cable TV, and broadband services.
Taiwan Mobile chairman Daniel Tsai explained the tie-up aims to integrate the operators’ respective 5G spectrum holdings, make deployment of mobile infrastructure more efficient and move towards a low-carbon, sustainable future.

One of the most promising applications of 5g is that due to the speed autonomous vehicles which use artificial intelligence software for driving decisions will be able to receive updates very quickly.
For instance it could save the data collected from the vehicle and quickly send it to the cloud. Then feed them into artificial intelligence software and train a process that would not be feasible with slower technology like 4G. With 5g technology we can get online updates in real-time and can use many technologies such as the internet of things as well as virtual and augmented reality.
“This merger will deliver more than the sum of its parts and be good for consumers,” Tsai added.
The merged company will have 11,000 5G base stations, giving it 90 percent population coverage.
T Star Mobile has spectrum in the 900MHz (40MHz), 2.6GHz and 3.5GHz bands, while Taiwan Mobile’s holdings include airwaves in the 700MHz, 1.8GHz, 2.1GHz, 3.5GHz, and 28GHz bands.
The most important news is the agreement and consequently the merger of Taiwan Mobile with T Star Mobile and the formation of a new “dream team” 5G in Taiwan.
The result of the merger will be that Taiwan Mobile in some cases, will include obtaining 100MHz of the spectrum on the 3.5GHz band for 5G wireless technology, which will be the largest mid-band capacity in Taiwan’s telecom industry, according to local media reports.
Once the deal is complete, a 3G network and thousands of redundant 4G base stations will shut down. Together with Taiwan Mobile’s energy-saving systems will save a claimed 40 million kilowatt-hours in power consumption annually. After T Star’s 5G network is closed, annual power savings will reach 100 million to 200 million kWh.
The agreement requires approval by the National Communications Commission and the Fair-Trade Commission.
Taiwan Mobile in RE100
The first telecommunications company to join the RE100 is Taiwan mobile, a global initiative for renewable energy sources from the work of the Climate Group and cooperation with CDP.
What is RE100?
RE100 is a global corporate leadership initiative bringing together influential businesses committed to 100% renewable electricity. RE100 member companies set a public goal to source 100% of their global electricity consumption from renewable sources by a specified (target) year.
Members are required to report progress against their target annually. CDP manages the reporting exercise. This document guides members through properly meeting their reporting requirement to RE100. Annual reporting to RE100 has historically maintained two reporting routes: the CDP Climate Change Questionnaire, and the RE100 Spreadsheet.
In the annual reporting cycles of 2021, but also in previous cycles in RE100 data based on the climate change questionnaire (CDP) supply of electricity from renewable sources, were not included. In 2022 this change is intended to improve RE100’s insights into its membership and greatly streamline the process of reporting to RE100 by making it part of reporting to CDP.
The most important commitment is that the Taiwan Mobile company is committed to using 100% electricity from renewable sources by 2040 to contribute to the global vision for 100% use of renewable energy sources.
All RE100 members who join by 22 February 2022 will receive requests to respond to the 2022 CDP Climate Change Questionnaire from CDP.
