Operating Systems for Ethical Hacking

Ethical Hacking is intentionally breaching an information system’s security to detect vulnerabilities in it and then fix them. Ethical Hackers conduct tests with the consent of the organization whose server is compromised. The most common organizations that hire Ethical Hackers are Banks, Financial Institutions, and any corporation with information systems. Ethical hackers work as penetration testers.

When we hear about penetration testing and hacking, we usually talk about Linux operating system. The best-operating system for hacking, Kali Linux is always the first choice for pentesters and “ethical hackers.”

Kali Linux

Kali Linux is the leading choice in penetration testing OS. It is essential software for testing during the development of deliberately vulnerable software.

Kali is a Debian-based Linux distribution designed for digital forensics and penetration testing. Developed by Offensive Security and is the successor to BackTrack of the same company. It contains many tools pre-installed analysis, detection, and exploitation of vulnerabilities.

Operating Systems
Kali Linux

Kali Linux Operations

  • More than 600 penetration testing tools included: After reviewing every tool included in BackTrack, we eliminated many tools that either did not work or duplicated other tools that provided the same or similar functionality.
  • ARMEL and ARMHF support: Since ARM-based single-board systems like the Raspberry Pi and BeagleBone Black, among others, are becoming more and more prevalent and inexpensive, we knew that Kali’s ARM support would need to be as robust as we could manage, with fully working installations for both ARMEL and ARMHF systems.
  • Kali Linux can be updated without the need to download a new version.
  • This OS can encrypt the entire disk.
  • You can easily automate and customize the Kali Linux installation on the network.
  • Support for USB live installs.

Parrot Security OS

ParrotSec is a specialized Linux distribution for professional pen testers. Hackers can use Parrot OS to perform vulnerability assessment, penetration testing, and computer forensics. So, in 2013, ParrotSec appeared, which makes the difference by adding tools to enhance anonymity so that one can use it as a daily Desktop with improved security in terms of privacy.

Parrot Linux

Parrot OS Operations

  • Provides support of experts to help you in cybersecurity.
  • This hacking OS has distributed infrastructure with dedicated CDNs (Content Distribution Network).
  • Includes the penetration tools such as Kali Linux, as mentioned.
  • You can share this operating system with others.

Fedora Security Lab

The Fedora Security Lab provides a safe test environment to work on security auditing, forensics, system rescue, and teaching security testing methodologies in universities and other organizations.

This special edition of Fedora is packed with useful utilities, applications, and programs that professionals and hobbyists find helpful in penetration testing situations and network or system security analysis. It is a similar operating system to the two mentioned above as it provides applications depending on the purpose and category we want to use.

Fedora Security Lab Operations

The operations where provided applications are divided into categories such as:

  • Network statistics
  • Password tools
  • Reconnaissance
  • VoIP (Voice over IP)
  • Web Applications Testing
  • Code analysis
  • Forensics

Fabian Affolter and Joerg Simon created Fedora Security Lab. They included many tools same the previous Operating Systems such as Nmap, John the Ripper, Wireshark, etc.

Backbox Linux

BackBox Linux is a distribution based on the well-known Ubuntu operating system. It is a distribution explicitly developed for penetration testing and security assessment purposes. It is used for security assessments and penetration tests. Its software repository even provides the latest stable versions of various systems, network analysis tools, and hacking tools.

BackBox Linux Operations

This hacking operating system provides easy to use the desktop environment. It is a Linux version that helps you to do vulnerability assessment and forensic analysis and offers the following:

  • Design with accuracy to avoid redundancies.
  • It consumes the minimum resource of your system.

Although these distributions may be preset to have a range of tools that cover the entire scope of a penetration tester’s work, installing them as an operating system is not necessary to do our job. In the case of Backbox Linux, we have a Ubuntu distribution. In contrast, in the case of Kali Linux, we have a Debian operating system. Their tools are almost the same and differ in some additions or changes, which do not interest the average network administrator or pentester since they have the know-how to configure them as they wish.

Trump stands by his own platform as Musk takes over Twitter

0
By Washington newsroom

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Donald Trump on Friday said he plans to make use of his own Truth Social media platform despite Twitter Inc’s takeover by billionaire Elon Musk, who has promised to reinstate the former U.S. president’s Twitter account.

“I like Elon, but I’m staying on Truth,” Trump told Fox News in an interview without explicitly saying he would not post on Twitter if his account is reinstated.

When he posts on his own platform, “it goes all over the place anyway,” Trump told Fox. “Everyone who is on Twitter and on all the other places, they all put it out anyway.”

Twitter banned Trump after his supporters’ deadly Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. Musk has previously said he would reinstate Trump’s account, but Trump then said he would not return.

Musk, a self-described free speech absolutist, took over Twitter with brutal efficiency on Thursday, firing top executives but offering little clarity over how he will achieve his ambitions goals for the influential social media platform.

Mere hours after Musk kicked off a new era at Twitter, he was deluged with pleas and demands from banned account holders and world leaders.

Earlier, in a statement on his own platform, Trump said he was happy Twitter was in “sane hands” after Musk took over, but did not say whether he would return to his account on the platform that banned him.

Trump added that he thought his own platform “looks and works better,” writing: “I LOVE TRUTH.”

Others whose Twitter accounts were suspended have had or could have them reinstated soon.

Elon Musk takes control of Twitter and changes everything

0

Elon Musk no longer has just a Twitter account. He has Twitter!

Elon Musk has finally taken control of Twitter, immediately made changes, and clearly showed the brand of management he wants to apply to the popular social networking platform.

“The bird has been freed,” the eccentric Billionaire wrote on his Twitter account after finalizing the purchase agreement for $44 billion. Elon Musk even entered Twitter headquarters in San Francisco holding a bathroom sink. “Entering Twitter HQ – let that sink in,” he wrote on Twitter.

The long-suffering Deal

Back in April, Elon Musk made his offer to acquire Twitter. Musk initially offered $54.20 per share. The total volume of the sale was about 44 billion dollars. Twitter accepted the offer; however, from the beginning, it appeared that there needed to be more problems in completing the deal.

Soon the Tesla strongman began to accuse Twitter of hiding data on the exact number of its actual users as well as the number of bots.

In July, Musk withdrew his proposal and stated he was no longer interested in acquiring Twitter. Since then, a legal dispute has started between the two sides, with Twitter claiming that Elon Musk should, based on the contract they have signed, either usually proceed with the acquisition or pay exorbitant compensation.

As the dispute between the two sides continues, Twitter shares plummet.

This week, on the eve of the deadline given by a US court to avoid going to trial, Elon Musk finally proceeds with the acquisition of Twitter and officially takes the company’s reins.

The Next Day

When Musk bought Twitter, he immediately fired Parag Agrawal, Twitter’s CEO, and two other top executives, according to the Washington Post.

After acquiring Twitter, Musk said he doesn’t want the popular platform to become a “free-for-all hellscape.”

“Twitter obviously cannot become a free-for-all hellscape where anything can be said with no consequences!” he wrote in a letter titled “Dear Twitter Advertisers.”

“There has been much speculation about why I bought Twitter and what I think about advertising. Most of it has been wrong,” Musk said. “Fundamentally, Twitter aspires to be the most respected advertising platform in the world that strengthens your brand and grows your enterprise.”

“In addition to adhering to the laws of the land, our platform must be warm, and welcoming to all, where you can choose your desired experience according to your preferences, just as you can choose, for example, to see movies or play video games ranging from all ages to mature,” he added.

The First Reactions

Former US President Donald Trump, who has been permanently banned from Twitter over allegations of inciting violence following the January 6, 2021, riots at Capitol Hill, welcomed the buyout but said he would not return to Twitter.

“TRUTH SOCIAL has become somewhat of a phenomenon. Last week it had bigger numbers than all other platforms, including TikTok, Twitter, Facebook, and the rest,” Trump claimed in a Truth Social post. “It also looks and works better to my eye.”

“I am very happy that Twitter is now in sane hands, and will no longer be run by Radical Left Lunatics and Maniacs that truly hate our country,” Trump continued. “Twitter must work hard to rid itself of all of the bots and fake accounts that have hurt it so badly. It will be much smaller, but better. I LOVE TRUTH!”

Others called for Musk to lift the penalties imposed by the social media platform. In response to @catturd2, an anonymous account with 852,000 followers who is known as a big supporter of Trump’s claims of voter fraud and who said he was blocked by many users, Musk tweeted: “I’m going to indulge more today.”

“Hey Elon Musk, now that you own Twitter, will you help push back against Trudeau’s C-11 cyber censorship bill”? tweeted Canada Proud, an organization working to oust Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

“First of all I heard (you),” Musk responded in a tweet.

The billionaire has not given details on how he will run the company. It has said it plans to cut jobs, leaving Twitter’s 7,500 employees to worry about their future. He also said Thursday that he didn’t buy Twitter to make more money but “to try to help humanity”.

The EU Warns

Elon Musk-acquired Twitter will have to respect the regulation on major platforms that has just been approved in Europe, warned the European Commissioner for the Internal Market, Thierry Breton, who had taken the initiative for this legislation.

Responding to the Tesla owner who wrote “the bird is freed“, Breton tweeted: “In Europe, the bird will fly according to our European rules”.

Halloween apps to get you into the Spooktacular spirit!

0

With Halloween just around the corner, we take a look at some of the spookiest apps for both the dead (and alive!) on the internet. The annual celebration had technology that brought it a long way from when the Celts first invented two thousand years ago, going from wax candles and handmade costumes to apps, holograms, and HD computer images.

The festival’s popularity shows no signs of slowing down. According to Yuqo.com, 19 percent of Britons celebrate Halloween yearly, while 37 percent of German millennials dress up. Closer to home, a survey from Webloyalty reveals that Irish people spend around €40m annually on costumes, decorations, and candy.

From innovative, scary games to fancy dress filters to pumpkin styling and scary jokes, we looked at some of the most tech-tastic apps on the market that are guaranteed to get you into a ghoulish mood.

Carve a pumpkin

Save yourself money on a pumpkin this year and let technology give you a slice of savings. The ever-popular carve a pumpkin for Halloween app for adults and kids is free to download on iOS. With an interface bursting with colour, this app allows you to practise drawing on a pumpkin before you attempt to cut your actual one apart. Simply use your finger to draw over a pumpkin, turning it into whatever creation you fancy. You also have the option to upload your virtual pumpkin to social media after. In English only, it requires iOS 7.0 or later to work.

Carve your selfie app

If you have ever wanted to carve your face onto a jack-o-lantern pain-free, then look no further. The Pumpkin Masters’ Carve your selfie app allows you to take a photo and turn it into a design that’s easy to transfer onto an actual vegetable. Another techtastic creation that’s free of charge is available on Android and iOS. You can also edit your design, from adjusting the contrast to smoothing edges on images. You can even have the option to stylize your cutout afterward.

Halloween cards maker and photos

Fancy using technology to email Halloween greeting cards to your friends and colleagues? The Halloween cards maker and photos app enables you to design cards that would freak anyone out. Although available not free to download on Android or iOS, its functionality outweighs the cost as you can avail of dozens of Halloween images, upload photos, edit them and personalise each with a unique message. It also has dozens of terrifying fonts and graphics and is in both English and Russian.

Scary prank

The scary prank cam is a clever piece of gamification for a smart yet freaky app and a chance to trick rather than treat. Appearing to be a game, you download the app and show it to someone you would like to give a fright to. During the game, a 3D ghost unexpectedly pops out and lets out a scream. Not for the fainthearted, it’s available on iOS only; purchase is required.

Halloween costumes

This free-to-download app provides Halloween outfit inspiration for people of all ages, tastes, and budgets. Containing plenty of ideas, you can either search for costume suggestions or shake your phone to be provided with different ideas. On Android only, it’s full of spooktacular suggestions, particularly for women. What’s even cooler is that it allows you to take a photo, choose a costume to place over it, and add stickers so you can vamp yourself up in seconds and share your freaky self on social media.

Halloween makeup editor

One of my all-time favourite apps, the Halloween makeup editor app features over 50 scary effects, 100 Halloween frames, and 100 zombie stickers. Free to use on iOS, you upload an image and swipe the stickers you want over your face. Avail of effects, insert text and turn yourself into a zombie, witch, vampire, or werewolf in no time. The only slightly annoying aspect of the app is that it contains a lot of ads. Still, the result is guaranteed to scare anyone!

Halloween wallpapers

Why not download the Halloween wallpapers app to add an even scarier touch to your smart devices. This app allows you to make your designs through the photo collage and photo editor, enabling you to share and email your creations in HD to whoever you think deserves a scare! With over one hundred thousand different designs, it’s free to download on iOS.

Halloween all-in-one

Lastly, ultimate spooky season fanatics need to look no further than the Halloween all-in-one app. Providing a countdown timer, wallpapers, eerie sound effects, and more, it’s free to download on iOS. Developed by Rocket Splash Games in English with its software recently updated to cater to most modern iPhones. Unfortunately, this nifty little app has yet to be available on Android, which is frightening as it’s so useful!

T-Rex skeleton draws crowds in Singapore before auction

By Travis Teo

SINGAPORE (Reuters) – T-Rex skeleton: The skeleton of a Tyrannosaurus Rex drew thousands of visitors in Singapore on Friday eager to have a look at the huge fossil before it heads for auction in Hong Kong.

Many took selfies with the dinosaur, named “Shen”, the Chinese word for god, which measures 12.2 metres long and 4.6 metres high and weighs 1,400 kg.

The T-Rex, which would have lived 66-68 million years ago, was unearthed in Montana, in the United States, in 2020.

“We knew the grandchildren are so into dinosaurs. They’re always like ‘dinosaur this, dinosaur that’, so we thought, ‘wow, it’s such a good experience to bring them to have a look at this real thing’,” retiree Nancy Seet said.

Dinosaur enthusiast Richard Chan, 37, said he was reliving his childhood.

“I collect a lot of Jurassic Park T-Rex figurines so really cool to see an actual one,” said Chan.  When Shen is sold, it will be the first auction of a T-Rex fossil in Asia, according to Christie’s.

Some experts have expressed concern that such significant items should not be auctioned to private collectors, where they may not be available to the public or to scientists.    Francis Belin, president at Christie’s Asia Pacific, said they hoped that exceptional objects ended up in institutions so they could be seen by the public. A guide price was not provided for Shen, nor the identity of the seller, but Belin said a previous T-Rex skeleton “Stan” fetched $31.8 million at a sale in New York in 2020. Shen the T-Rex is on public view for three days until Sunday. The auction in Hong Kong takes place on Nov. 30.

Aurubis says it was hit in wider cyberattack on metals industry

By Maria Sheahan

BERLIN (Reuters) –Aurubis cyberattack: Aurubis, Europe’s biggest copper smelter, said on Friday it had been targeted as part of a wider cyberattack on the metals and mining industry which had forced it to shut down its IT systems and disconnect them from the internet.

Germany’s BSI cybersecurity agency warned earlier this week that cyber risks were the greatest they had ever been, with high levels of cyber crime and risks related to the Ukraine conflict.

BSI said, however, that there did not appear to be any overarching campaign against German targets.

“The attack was apparently part of a larger attack on the metals and mining industry,” said Aurubis, without naming any other companies.

Aurubis said it was able to largely maintain production even though it was forced to shut down numerous systems at its sites and disconnect them from the internet as a precaution.

“The production and environmental protection facilities at the smelter sites are running, and incoming and outgoing goods are also being maintained manually,” Aurubis said on Friday.

The extent of the impact is being assessed, said Aurubis, adding that it was working with investigating authorities.

Shares in Aurubis, which did not provide any further details, fell more than 4% on the news.

Earlier this year, a cyberattack on a satellite communications company knocked out remote control of thousands of wind turbines in central Europe.

And a German subsidiary of Russia’s Rosneft was in March the target of a cyberattack by what BSI called “hacktivists” at Anonymous Germany.

With U.S. midterms ahead, Musk’s Twitter takeover raises fear of misinformation wave

0
By Joseph Ax

(Reuters) -With the U.S. midterm elections less than two weeks away, Elon Musk’s $44 billion acquisition of Twitter could unleash a fresh wave of election misinformation just as voters are casting ballots that will determine control of Congress for the next two years, political and media experts say.

Musk, the CEO of electric car maker Tesla, says he is a free speech “absolutist” and has vowed to loosen the reins on chatter within the social media app, which in recent years had striven to limit toxic content it viewed as dangerously false or discriminatory even as its global influence has widened.

Musk sought to address fears on Thursday, telling Twitter advertisers that the platform “cannot become a free-for-all hellscape, where anything can be said with no consequences!” On Friday, the entrepreneur announced he would form a “content moderation council with widely diverse viewpoints.”

U.S. Midterms

But Musk has voiced skepticism about the site’s permanent bans of figures such as former President Donald Trump, who lost his account – and its nearly 90 million followers – shortly after the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol by a mob of his supporters. Trump had used his account to assert falsely that the 2020 election was stolen from him.

Musk has also criticized the site’s moderation policies in the past, and his plans to make major cuts to staff could hamstring the site’s ability to police its content, which it has struggled at times to do in the past.

“The bird is freed,” he wrote on Twitter after completing the acquisition on Thursday.

How much influence a more loosely moderated Twitter would have on political discourse in the run-up to the Nov. 8 general election is not clear. Early voting has already begun in a number of states, and polls show most voters have already made up their minds.

A more permissive Twitter could help to amplify false narratives around key election results in the days after Nov. 8 if some candidates refuse to accept the outcome and cry fraud as some fear may happen.

Republicans say many social media platforms are biased against them, and numerous conservative Twitter accounts – including Republican politicians – on Friday welcomed Musk’s takeover. Democrats fear that Trump supporters will promote far-right views or false claims of election fraud on Twitter if permitted.

The site has been a key political tool for years, offering politicians and activists around the world the ability to reach millions with largely unfiltered rhetoric. Twitter has played a role in organizing mass campaigns, including the #MeToo movement targeting sexual misconduct and the Arab Spring protests in the Middle East.

Critics, however, have warned that the site has also helped spread both misinformation – inaccurate or misleading information – and disinformation – purposefully false information – that undermines democratic principles and offers foreign actors an avenue for meddling.

“(Musk’s acquisition) could certainly create a much bigger pathway for disinformation agents to spread harmful information on the platform,” said Yosef Getachew, the director of the media and democracy program at Common Cause, the nonpartisan public interest organization.

“Content moderation policies are only effective if there are people there to enforce them and systems in place to ensure they are being enforced. If those rules are going to be out the window, that is going to be incredibly harmful.”

Polls show Democrats may be on the verge of losing their razor-thin majority in Congress on Nov. 8.

The Trump Question?

Since his ban, Trump has launched his own social media app, Truth Social, and has said he will not return to Twitter even if reinstated. On Friday morning, he posted to his 4.4 million followers on Truth Social, bragging that the app has “bigger numbers” than all other platforms, including Twitter, in an apparent indication that he does not intend to switch.

“I am very happy that Twitter is now in sane hands, and will no longer be run by Radical Left Lunatics and Maniacs that truly hate our country,” he wrote, before adding, “I LOVE TRUTH!”

Following the 2016 presidential election, when U.S. security agencies concluded that Russia had surreptitiously used social media to mount influence campaigns aimed at manipulating the outcome, Twitter and other social media sites ramped up their efforts to prevent the spread of misinformation, with mixed success.

Twitter sought to eliminate false tweets about the coronavirus pandemic, when misinformation about the scale of the disease and the efficacy of various medical treatments – exacerbated by some political leaders – spread widely, hampering the public health response.

In the aftermath of the 2020 election, Twitter permanently banned Trump and some of his allies, such as attorney Sidney Powell and pillow entrepreneur Mike Lindell, who echoed his false election fraud claims. The site has also deleted thousands of accounts affiliated with right-wing extremist groups such as the Proud Boys and the far-right conspiracy theory known as QAnon.

But some experts have questioned whether those efforts are adequate given the sheer volume and speed of misinformation online. A company whistleblower said earlier this year that Twitter had prioritized user growth over reducing spam and bots; the company rejected his account.

Conservatives have accused the site of censoring their view points for political reasons, an allegation Twitter has denied.

Marjorie Taylor Greene, the Republican Georgia congresswoman and Trump acolyte whose personal account was banned permanently in January for spreading false information about COVID-19, tweeted, “FREEDOM OF SPEECH!” from her official congressional account on Thursday.

Rapper Kanye West, whose Twitter account was suspended for posting anti-Semitic remarks, appeared to be active again on Friday.

Interpol says metaverse opens up new world of cybercrime

By Dina Kartit and Elizabeth Howcroft

LONDON (Reuters) – Global police agency Interpol said it was preparing for the risk that online immersive environments – the “metaverse” – could create new kinds of cybercrime and allow existing crime to take place on a larger scale.

Interpol’s member countries have raised concerns about how to prepare for possible metaverse crime, Madan Oberoi, Interpol’s executive director for technology and innovation, told Reuters.

“Some of the crimes may be new to this medium, some of the existing crimes will be enabled by the medium and taken to a new level,” he said.

Phishing and scams could operate differently when augmented reality and virtual reality are involved, Oberoi said. Child safety issues were also a concern, he said.

Virtual reality could also facilitate crime in the physical world, Oberoi said.

“If terror group wants to attack a physical space they may use this space to plan and simulate and launch their exercises before attacking,” he said.

Virtual Worlds – Propaganda

Earlier this month, the European Union’s law enforcement agency Europol said in a report that terror groups may, in the future, use virtual worlds for propaganda, recruitment and training. Users may also create virtual worlds with “extremist rules,” the report said.

If metaverse environments record users’ interactions on blockchain, “this might make it possible to follow everything someone does based on one interaction with them – providing valuable information for stalkers or extortionists,” Europol said.

The metaverse became a tech buzzword in 2021, with companies and investors betting that virtual world environments will grow in popularity and mark a new stage in the internet’s development. Facebook announced it was changing its name to Meta in October 2021 to mark its shift towards this idea.

But so far, this vision shows little signs of materialising. Meta’s stock value plunged on Thursday as investors voiced skepticism about spending on metaverse bets. Sales of blockchain-based assets representing virtual land and other digital possessions have also fallen sharply after a period of frenetic growth last year. (This story has been refiled to fix reference in paragraph 9 to say Meta’s name change was announced in October 2021, not November)
